A Walk Down the Dark Alleys of the Bayou: A Brief Look at The Dark Quarter Kickstarter

Lucky Duck Games have continued to expand the genre blend of board gaming with app integration. Their last title, Destinies, struck a chord with gamers and is currently rated a 7.9 on BoardGameGeek.com . The games allow any gamer to approach a title without the need for a full understanding of the game rule book and allow you to have a gamemaster with you along the way. In collaboration with Van Ryder Games (Detectives: City of Angels, Final Girl), The Dark Quarter brings the gamer to 1981 New Orleans, where they will encounter murder, mystery, and bouts with a occult.

You work with the Beaumont Agency as you help to uncover the murky seedy underbelly of the French Quarters. Like with many of the their previous titles, you can choose from four characters and work your way through the different stories that are being presented through the story. Each character is equipped with their own backstory and abilities. Your character’s backstory can impact the way your character interacts with the world and NPCs in the game. Your choices and abilities can open some possibilities while also closing others. Your character does have a preset of abilities within the areas of talent, combat, arcane, and charisma. While they start on one level, you can help improve their standings within those areas while also unlocking different abilities unique to them.

When looking at the visual setup of the game, you are engrossed into the atmosphere of the game’s theme. From the miniature and dice to the components and character boards, each character’s pieces are unique to each character. Beyond the individual character items, the other elements of the game helps you to become one with the story as it unfolds. The game titles are beautifully illustrated to help you see the environments that you will navigate in the world of the Dark Quarter. Along with the game components, the app itself helps provide the final touch by gamemastering your experience and playing a soundtrack to accompany your playthrough.

Why should you back this game?

Both companies have had a great track record of not only creating high quality games but they are consistent with making sure games release to their backers each time. Also, they provide a good value for the cost of the game. Like their previous campaigns, this current Kickstarter provided daily unlocks that add more components, improvements to the current components, and added depth to the game.

While Lucky Duck Games titles end up at retail, the best value for your dollar is provided through the Kickstarter campaign. Along with the $63 pledge, you get The Yesterday Demon & Other Stories Expansion for free, along with the other unlocked content from the game. There are additional expansions and upgraded components that you can be purchased to go along your game, like deluxe miniatures, medal and plastic tokens. You can also purchase it all for $147. If you still want more time to think about your purchase, you can pledge $2 and make your final decisions during the game’s pledge manager.

If you’re interested in this game, please check out their campaign before it ends May 5th, 2022.
