Weekly Comic Overview: Last Comic Overview from 2018
We’re back! Thank you everyone for your patience with us as we deal with some personal changes. We are working hard at Steam for Dreams to provide more consistent content on our weekly comic reading. Continue to follow us on our social medias for updates on some of our favorite reads…
So many books were left in my subscription box and for today, we are only going to focus on a few standout issues from the box. Some of the bigger titles like Heroes in Crisis, Batman Damned, and Return of Wolverine will be covered on a separate post but I wanted to take this time to focus on books that I hope others will pick up outside of their usual picks.
The first book I want to cover is MCMLXXV:
MCMLXXV is brought to us by Joe Casey and Ian Macewan and published by Image Comics. The story allows us to follow a cab driver name Pamela Evans and it takes place in 1975. When we first meet her, she’s picking up a new fare at night. While she drives through the streets of New York, a gang of ninjas block her from getting her ride to their destination. Next, we see why Pam is not the one to mess with. As the story reaches the end, we start to see how her fight with the dark world has been going on since her youth.
This book will definitely be added to my subscription list. From the captive art to the immersive writing, MCMLXXV is a book to definitely check out. The next book I’m excited to get caught up on is The Seeds.
The Seeds is written by Ann Nocenti ,drawn by David Aja, and published by Dark Horse’s creator-own comic imprint Berger Books. Aja’s work has always captivated me since his days on Marvel’s Hawkeye. I’ve read the released two issues of the four issue mini-series and couldn’t put it down. The world that Nocenti wrote feels alien and familiar at the same time. It’s weird to talk about the comic
This story places you in a world that feels more passive than sad. The world feels like it has reached the final stage of depression: acceptance. Astra wants to continue to provide legitimate news in a world that is segmented by a wall. By the end of issue one, we see who Race is and why his presence changes . The artstyle has a pulp feel The last comic we are looking at is Crowded.
The creative team that created this book with Image Comics is large. The creators are: Christopher Sebela (writer) , Ro Stein (artist), Ted Brandt (artist) , Triona Farrell (colorist) , and Cardinal Rae (letterer).
I am interested in checking out the second and third issue but I’m not sure if I want to subscribe to the book or simply wait for the trade to be released. The art is great and the writing was frantic. I feel that Triona Farrell did a fair job on the colors but something felt off. Some of the panels felt flat due to the lack of shadows. I feel that this wasn’t strictly on her because looking at her work on other titles, her colors popped more and had more volume. Also, this is a new book and sometimes the team grow stronger with future entries.
A few more books have been read but we will add them to their own post in the near future. If you have any books that you feel that we should read, please send them our way! Connect with us on Twitter and Facebook to provide your thoughts on what we read and what we should read in the future.
