Playing in Gotham with the Bat-Family: An Updated look of Gotham Knights
Since its first gameplay reveal in August 2020, DC fans and gamers alike have been looking for more information about this single to four player coop title from WB Montreal. The premise of the game explores a near future Gotham that has suffered from the lost of Commissioner Gordon and maybe the lost of Bruce Wayne? The details of the latter may not be true but we will have to wait until the launch of the game to know for sure.
Throughout the next year, we heard small updates here and there about the title, including a delay in release from the window of 2021. While delays can be disappointing, it is easily forgiven when it’s used to improve the quality of the game. And while the delay was presented, we were presented with another trailer that dove more into the story that players will explore in the game:
The dark and somber tone of the trailer allows you to feel the sense of dread that has befallen our heroes as they deal with this gigantic feat without their mentor. The intrigue of the Court of Owls, similar to the comics, is both alluring and frightening. How will they overcome a powerful group that is veiled in the shadows, with a reach that goes beyond one’s understanding.
Gameplay Demos
The first demo audiences were able to witness was in 2020. While we were still dealing with the increased issues with the pandemic, WB Montreal was able to work as a studio and continue to create a title unlike any previous Batman game. Last year, we was shown gameplay from a Pre-Alpha build of the game. The gameplay starts with us following Barbara Gordon aka Batgirl as she meets up with Robin as they approach a stronghold that’s frozen and controlled by our favorite ice villain. We are treated with some views of how Batgirl dishes out punishment to criminals as she looks to find a way into the building. As she gets in, we are shown that you can not only approach the fight in different ways but can also do team moves during battle. Along the progression, you can take note of the fully voice banter between Batgirl, Robin, Detective Montoya, and Alfred. As the demo comes to it’s climax, we witness a small portion of a battle against Mr. Freeze.
Today, around 6:00am PST, WB released an updated look at the gameplay of Gotham Knights:
This demo allows the viewers to follow behind Nightwing and Red Hood. We are able to see how they can play corporately and how they play solo. We’re also given a glimpse of stealth as Nightwing and Red Hood attempts to sneak up on a scene that contains members of the Court of Owls.
Preorder Details
Today, WB Montreal shared new preorder information about their upcoming title. First, the game now has an updated official release date: October 25th, 2022. This is great news but there some caveats for those who are still gaming with last gen consoles. To make sure that their vision can be experienced the best, WB Montreal is having their latest game only available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S/X, and PC. On each platform, the game will have three different versions: Standard Edition ($69.99), Deluxe Edition ($89.99), and a Collector’s Edition ($299.99). This may be one of the first Current Gen only title from WB and the pricing is similar to what Sony has started to use for their PlayStation 5 titles.
The Deluxe Edition includes the core game, Jim Lee inspired costumes, and a few other perks. The Collector’s Edition includes the Deluxe Edition, additional digital perks, a Ledbook paging with 16 page Mediabook, Gotham City Map, and a Knights Diorama Statue with all four protagonists.
While many are not into pricey collectables, the overall game still looks appealing and may be the thing to win you over to purchase one of these three editions. If you are interested in the Collector’s Edition, it is currently available for preorder on GameStop and Best Buy’s website. This may change over the next few days.
